January leads to an increased interest in divorce

The first full week of January marks a time when divorce filings tend to surge in Connecticut and throughout the country. People like to start the divorce process in January because the new year represents a chance to get a fresh start in life. It is also just after the holiday season when some finally realize that they can't remain in their current relationships anymore.

Of course, it may not make sense for an individual to rush into ending a marriage. Instead, it may be best to meet with an attorney to get more information about the separation process. In some cases, it's a good idea to pursue counseling prior to divorce.

Those who have children should not stay in a marriage because they think it is best for their children. For the most part, a child can sense if a parent isn't happy in a relationship. Furthermore, they may start to emulate some of the behaviors that they learn from an unhappy parent.

Anyone who is on the receiving end of a divorce request should meet with an attorney as soon as possible. While an individual may not have seen the end of a marriage coming, it is rarely a good idea to ignore the situation in the hopes that it will change.

Those who are seeking a divorce may benefit from hiring legal counsel. This may be true even if a person resolves the matter privately or through the use of a mediator. An attorney could review the final agreement to determine if it adheres to state law and is in the client's best interest. Legal counsel may also review any existing prenuptial agreement to determine if its terms are valid and can be enforced.
