3 tips for surviving your first Valentine’s Day after divorce

On Behalf of | Dec 28, 2018 | Firm News |

If you are newly single, you may be dreading Valentine’s Day this year. The first Valentine’s Day after your divorce can be painful and disorienting. But while this holiday may be gut-wrenching at first, you can learn how to make it through it.

It is possible to celebrate Valentine’s Day and have a good time even after the end of your marriage. Here are a few pointers on how to spend this holiday.

1. Keep yourself busy

You may need to keep your mind off everything romantic. If you find your mind wandering when left alone, make some sort of plan to keep your brain occupied on February 14th. Sign up for a class, go to the gym or get some yard work done. While it may not be romantic, keeping sad and angry thoughts at bay helps you manage.

2. Go out (or stay in) with your friends

One of the main benefits of being single is you can do virtually anything you want whenever you want. You do not need to ask your partner about your plans. Consider having dinner and getting some drinks with your single friends. Whether you have a party at home and watch movies or go out to a nightclub, surrounding yourself with friends will remind you of the freedom and joy you can experience after your divorce.

3. Take yourself on a date

Now that you do not have a relationship to worry about, it is the perfect time to focus on yourself. You can nourish and fall in love with yourself. Take the time to reconnect with your favorite hobbies and activities. Go to a spa, see a movie or go to your favorite restaurant. You may find it oddly satisfying to treat yourself with love even when you are by yourself on a holiday focused on couples.
