Postnuptial agreement can help divorce process move quickly

Many Connecticut residents may be familiar with former NBC personality Matt Lauer. After he was accused of misconduct at work, his personal life was affected. His wife of nearly a decade filed for divorce.

At first, it seemed that it would be difficult for the couple to sort out matters pertaining to their split, such as division of property and alimony payments. However, many of these matters were easily decided when it came to light that the couple had a postnuptial agreement. A postnuptial agreement is a legally binding document in which married spouses agree beforehand on who is entitled to certain assets in the event of a divorce.

Lauer's estranged wife will receive a financial allowance and will also be entitled to share the equity of several of the properties the former couple owned together, including a house in Connecticut and a horse ranch abroad. The couple has already begun to share custody of their three children, and by all accounts, the process has become an amicable situation. Both Lauer and his estranged wife say that they are looking forward to the divorce being finalized in a swift manner.

When a marriage ends, people may worry that the process of divorce might be lengthy and stressful. Many people opt to partner with an experienced attorney. An attorney may be able to determine how to best resolve points of contention during a divorce, and make sure that their client is educated and aware of proceedings that a divorce entails, such as alimony, child support and division of property.
